Awesome lesson from student to teacher! This kid is amazing, pretty much everything that I think would be cool about being a kid in Esaan, in the Thai countryside... this kid's got it! I have caught mudfish with him, he showed me how to get red ants out of the nest (with minimal stinging :) ), he catches insects, OH, the best one, we caught tree lizards and made a salad with them!
This kid rocks.

Harvesting red ants and their eggs with some 4th grade boys. The ants will add sour flavor to a Tom Saep soup! We ate the fire-hot-sour soup a few hours later with chicken, pig intestine, and sticky rice... simply wonderful :)

My favorite fruit, coming into season right about now!

The head teachers take care of me very well ~ This combo is a common present to find waiting at the bottom of my steps when I'm ready for school in the morning. The mango is mine, from the nearby market, the purple fruit as well (in English I think its called a Jambolan? Although this might be useless because they may not grow in any English speaking countries). It is called Luuk Wa in Thai... and the fried fish is covered in red and green hot chillies, then doused with lime and a red onion semi-sweet and salty garlic heavy sauce. The fish is eaten with warm sticky rice of course, and this all together makes one of the best breakfasts I could wish for...

Several of the fruits I treasure while living in the countryside... most of them local, some of them brought in from the coast. Here you can see Mango, Durian, Snakefruit, Guava, Sapodilla, Mangosteen, Banana, Rambutan, Jackfruit, Dragonfruit, and Longan. Additionally, (maybe even the best part about it!) all of this pictured here can easily be bought with 10$ and get plenty of change back! Because I'm friends with the fruit-lady, I think I got all this actually for about 6$. Vegans and Juice-fanatics, feel free to pay me a visit anytime! The one and only expense worth worrying about is the first step: the one-way plane ticket.
